How Can the Breastfeeding Specialists at Pediatric Place Help Me?Our Pediatric Nurse Practitioners are also "breastfeeding specialists", which means they have received additional training in breastfeeding support through Lamaze International. Loyette and Michele can support mothers, babies, and families regarding a variety of breastfeeding issues (i.e. positioning, latch-on, supplementation, and nutrition). Our Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioners can provide holistic care for the baby while incorporating and addressing the needs of the family. At Pediatric Place, we have a beautiful, serene breastfeeding room that ensures total privacy as well as comfort. Breastfeeding mothers will feel comfortable in a plush recliner and have the use of supportive pillows for breastfeeding (i.e. a Boppie, foam wedge, and feather pillows). In order to add to the privacy, a decorative screen is used that provides the ultimate privacy for mother and baby when our providers or family members enter the room. For added convenience, an exam table equipped with diagnostic tools is located in the breastfeeding room to allow for the physical examination of the baby without leaving the comfort of the breastfeeding room. When you arrive for a scheduled breastfeeding consult, mother, baby, and family will be taken to the breastfeeding room. A member of our team of Registered Nurses will weigh your baby, listen to baby's heart and lungs, and measure baby's pulse and breathing rate. The nurse will provide you to you a copy of the baby's vital signs and prepare the mother and baby for comfort while breastfeeding. Loyette or Michele will then enter the room and assist both mother and baby to achieve optimal positioning for latch-on. Initially, Loyette or Michele will simply observe mother and baby breastfeeding and then make adjustments suitable to achieve both comfort and control with the feeding process. After the feeding, the Registered Nurse will return to measure a post-feeding weight. By comparing both pre- and post-feeding weights, Loyette and Michele can assess if baby is consuming enough milk at a feeding. In addition to performing a physical exam and prescribing appropriate therapies, Loyette and Michele will answer questions and provide support to the mother, baby, and family regarding overall health concerns related to the baby. Loyette and Michele are happy to provide mother and baby expert breastfeeding support as well as addressing other physical needs of mother and baby. If you plan to use a breast pump, please bring the breast pump with you to the visit as it would be helpful. As an added service, your breastfeeding consult will include proper fitting of breast pump accessories. We look forward to working together in helping you through this miraculous and precious experience.
